Summer's Last Call: Your September Home Checklist.

September always feels like a fresh start.

The kids are back to school, summer vacations are wrapping up, the evenings are getting cooler, and routines are starting to settle back in. While fall may not officially be here yet, now is the perfect time to give your home a little attention before the cooler weather arrives.

A few simple maintenance tasks now can help prevent bigger headaches later and let you enjoy the last few warm weekends of the year.

Start Outside While the Weather is Still Nice

Before the leaves start falling, take a walk around your home and look for anything that may need attention.

Check you eavestroughs and downspouts for debris, make sure water is being direced away from the foundation, and inspect ecterior caulking around windows and doors. Take a look at your roof from the ground for any obvois damaged or missing shingles.

September is also a great time to tackle those small exterior repairs that somehow stayed on the summer to do list.

Give Your Windows & Doors a Check

Cooler mornings have a way of reminding us where the drafts are.

Inspect weatherstripping around exterior doors and check the caulking around windows. Small gaps may not seem like much now, but sealing them before winter can help keep your home more comfortable and energy efficient.

Prepare Your Heating System

You may not be ready to turn the heat on yet, but that first chilly morning is coming.

Replace or clean your furnace filter, check your thermostat, and consider scheduling any required furnace or HVAC maintenance before heating season is in full swing.

If your home has a fireplace, September is also a good time to have it inspected and cleaned before those cozy fall evenings begin.

Don't Forget the Basement

After summer storms and before the wetter fall season, take a quick look around your basement.

Check for signs of moisture around foundation walls, windows and plumbing penetrations. If you have a sump pump, test it to make sure it's operating properly.

Catching a small moisture issue early is much easier than discovering it after a heavy fall rainfall or spring thaw.

Get Ahead of the Leaves

Beautiful? Absolutely.

Fun to clean out of your eavestroughs? Not so much.

Take a look at trees around your home and identify branches that are damaged, hanging over the roof or getting too close to the house. Once the leaves begin falling, keep eavestroughs, drains and window wells clear so water has somewhere to go.

Slowly Put Summer Away

There's no need to pack up the patio just yet.

Enjoy those last warm evenings, but start thinking about where outdoor furniture, cushions, hoses, gardening tools and seasonal equipment will be stored. A little organization now makes the inevitable "where are we putting all of this?" weekend much easier.
